TOPICS TO REVISE, YEAR 10 2007
There will be two maths exams, a non-calculator (1st Paper)
and a calculator(2nd Paper).
Both exams will have a section that everybody will do and then a section that will be slightly different according to which set you are in.
Listed below is a guideline to the topics you will need to revise.
1. Algebra Changing the subject of a formula, including changing the formula involving squares, square roots and brackets. Use of formulae including finding volumes and surface areas.
2. Dimensions Identifying what a formula may be finding (length, area, volume) by considering dimensions.
3. Statistics Box-plots, stem and leaf diagrams, scatter diagrams, histograms, cumulative frequency curves. Also the ability to interpret these graphs in the context of the question given. Also you must be able to use stratified sampling.
4. Shape Construction using pair of compasses. Loci.
5. Graphs Gradients, equations of lines y = mx + c and ax +by + c = 0 will be needed. The ability to sketch and draw is needed including identification of asymptotes.
6. Algebra Expansion of brackets. Factorisation including factorising quadratics and recognition of the difference of two squares. Solving quadratics by factorising. (A sets quadratic formula, A Sets recognition of the vertex of a parabola). Solving equations using completing the square.
7. Number Recurring decimals, converting to fractions and vice-versa.
8. Trigonometry Pythagoras. Revision of year 9 work. SOHCAHTOA. Area of a triangle using ½ ab sin C.
9. Graphs Transformation of graphs, both describing transformations and sketching. All the work from the ICT centre will be tested.
10. Algebra Lower school equations, fractions, indices, simultaneous equations.
11. Probability Tree diagrams useful here. You must know the AND rule along with the OR rule. These being the rules for independent and mutually exclusive events. A sets should be aware of conditional probability.
12. Graphs Drawing quadratics, cubics and hyperbolic curves from an equation. Tables of values will be useful here.
13. Transformations Enlargements, rotations, translations and reflections.
15. Number Work You should be able to work with fractions and decimals and use them for percentage and ratio work. Also you should be able to write numbers as products of primes and find hcf/lcm of 2 or more sets of numbers.
A sets only
1) Surds
Work on simplification and rationalising the denominator
2) Tangents and Normals
Finding equations of and using the equations to find points of intersection. You need to know information about the gradients of tangents and normals.
Also how to find perpendicular bisectors.
3) Revision of the fencing problem.
Work on regular polygons involving interior and exterior angles. Also linking the trig work in the context of polygons to find the areas.
4) Proportion
Direct, Nonlinear and Inverse proportion as well as the use of the unitary method needs to be learnt.
