Who is who?

The Department consist of 4 main members of staff
Mr Dieter Hecht (Head of Department),
Mrs Alison Griffin,
Ms Yvonne Steinruck,
Mr Grahame Whitehead.
We are ably assisted by Mr Holding and Mr Krzeminski, who each teach one or two sets. Last but not least, there is our German Assistant, Mrs Bettina Krüger.

Aims and Objectives

We emphatically subscribe to the statements of the teaching aims and objectives set out in the latest GCSE Specifications (see AQA GCSE Specification p.13/14): We therefore aim to develop pupils’ ability to
  • listen and respond to different types of spoken language, increasing in length and complexity.
  • read and respond to different types of written language, increasing in length and complexity and including ICT-based sources.
  • use language strategies as help in the process of eliciting the meaning of spoken and written language.
  • express themselves in speech using an increasingly wider range of vocabulary, syntax and language structures.
  • express themselves in writing using an increasingly wider range of vocabulary, syntax and language structures.
  • understand and apply the grammar of German, initially as detailed in the Specification for Foundation Tier, but from Year 10 onwards for Higher Tier and beyond.
  • gain knowledge and understanding of countries and communities where German is spoken.
  • gain a positive attitude to German learning.
  • build up a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of German.
We aim to achieve these objectives in line with the school’s mission statement by offering the boys “the opportunity to fulfil their potential in an atmosphere in which they can enjoy their work”.
