In Community Action there are a number of activities that many people are involved in. Here is a short list of some of the main ones. Each member of community action is required to do a regular community service placement.
Helping in a primary school
This was a very popular option when the old time table allowed a longer lunch break. This is no longer feasible because breaks have now been shortened. However 6th formers still take part in this when they have free double periods in the daytime.
Visiting the elderly
This is one of the more rewarding placements. It involves visiting an elderly person in their home about once a week and maybe doing some simple chores for them. This is good for people who don’t want to work with children. You make a friend who is older than you and gain an insight into their lives.
Working in a Charity Shop
Most charity shops rely on volunteers to help in the shops. You can apply to work at your local charity shop and provide support to organisations such as Oxfam, Cancer Research, Help the Aged....
Scout Association
Some of the members of Community Action help at a beaver colony or their local cub pack.
This involves working with children and can be a lot of fun. Commitment is minimum one evening a week but can be much more.
St.John’s ambulance
This is a first aid organisation that 11-18 year olds can join as a cadet. You go on public duties at carnivals and sporting events.
