Entrance Assessment

THE ASSESSMENT DAY

The Assessment Day will be an opportunity for the School to test your son’s abilities in the core subjects of Mathematics and English, including reading, along with some measures of general ability. All the work is set at National Curriculum ability levels appropriate for the age group and these assessments should be seen as a positive opportunity for your son to show his ability in these academic areas. Advisory notes are below for Maths and English.

Mathematics

There are two elements in the Mathematics assessment. A challenging and interesting test, which is appropriate for each age range, followed by a short mental arithmetic test.

English

Your son will be given a comprehension exercise, followed by story writing.  This will give your son the opportunity to demonstrate both his understanding of text but also his ability to express himself imaginatively. There will also be a standardised reading test to complete and each boy will be asked to read aloud to a member of staff who will also use this time to hold a conversation about personal interests both in and out of school.

 Programme of the Day

Of almost equal importance as the assessment itself are the opportunities the day provides for both your son and for the School beyond the normal classroom environment. Your son will experience life as a Junior School boy, enjoying a variety of activities in our outstanding facilities as well as giving my staff a deeper insight into your son over an extended period, not only working but also socially. It is hoped that during the day each boy will have the opportunity to visit and enjoy the Science laboratory, the ICT Centre and the Sports’ Hall.  There will be an extended break for the boys half way through the morning assessment, when drinks and biscuits will be provided, and the boys will also have lunch in our Dining Hall.

Children who miss this assessment day or apply late will be given the examination elements of the assessment day but we will not be able to accommodate individuals to repeat the whole day format described above.
