Junior School Inspection report 2011

As a Junior School we are proud of the many positive statements found in the report which include:

  • The more able pupils, including those identified as gifted and talented, achieve the high standards of which they are capable. They have excellent independent learning skills. Those with EAL progress well. Those with LDD make rapid progress and some achieve notably high national test results.
  • Independent work is well developed and research is much enjoyed.
  • Lessons are very thoroughly planned, usually with a sequence of activities that
  • pupils find interesting and engaging.
  • ‘the use of high quality stimulating resources, particularly interactive whiteboards, engages pupils’ interest.’
  • The school is committed to encouraging active approaches to learning.
  • Active approaches to learning in lessons are effective in motivating pupils
  • This high level of attainment and progress was seen in many of the lessons observed.
  • A range of teaching strategies are used that reflect pupils’ learning styles and this ensures that all pupils have opportunities to make rapid progress.
  • Independent work is well developed and research is much enjoyed.
  • Many of the lessons observed were of outstanding quality.
  • Good and often outstanding teaching enables pupils to achieve well in lessons.
  • Teaching is very effective in promoting pupils’ progress and supports the aims of the school to enable pupils to achieve their best.
  • Teachers often model effectively the processes they want the pupils to learn, and their excellent subject knowledge inspires confidence in the pupils.
  • A clear definition of objectives ensures that pupils know what is expected of them.
  • A range of teaching strategies are used that reflect pupils’ learning styles and this ensures that all pupils have opportunities to make rapid progress.
  • They provide for the wide range of ability in most classes well.
  • Thorough use is made of questioning, often pitched at various levels depending on pupils’ abilities, which makes pupils think hard and prevents them from drifting off task.
  • This high level of attainment and progress was seen in many of the lessons observed.
  • The school has a policy of encouraging active approaches to learning and this was widely evident in the lessons observed.
  • A range of teaching strategies are used that reflect pupils’ learning styles and this ensures that all pupils have opportunities to make rapid progress.
  • Thorough use is made of questioning, often pitched at various levels depending on pupils’ abilities, which makes pupils think hard and prevents them from drifting off task.
  • Teachers monitor progress very closely.
  • Teachers maintain a positive rapport and strong relationships with pupils, and the friendly atmosphere gives pupils confidence.
  • Most lessons proceed at a brisk pace, which maintains pupils’ interest.
  • Teachers often model effectively the processes they want the pupils to learn, and their excellent subject knowledge inspires confidence in the pupils.
  •   The extra-curricular programme is wide and popular, and beneficial links exist with the wider community.
  • A considerable emphasis is placed on physical development, with a generous time allocation to games, physical education and swimming, and the introduction of dance. The school has won a national award for its provision for the arts; many pupils learn a musical instrument and participate in school plays.
