We welcomed our Polish visitors who arrived in school from Chrzanow on Thursday morning (March 9th). Eight children and two teachers came over to spend the week with us, learning more about our school and life in and around Nottingham.  Marta Szostek-Trzep and Barbara Kowalska were the two teachers that accompanied the following children;

Radoslaw Barski (13)    Julia Trzep (8)
Miłlosz Lorek  (13)Katarzyna Kowalska (9)
Daniel Sadzikowski  (12) Ewa Szuster (11)
Maurycy Rudol (11)Martyna Lach(11)

During their time here they were staying in the homes of our own pupils with activities planned throughout their stay. After a delay they arrived into Luton late on Wednesday evening and were driven up to Nottingham by Mr. Jones and Mr. Bevell. On Thursday they braved the rain and went in search of Robin Hood and the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest.  On Friday they spent the day at Nottingham Castle and looking around the city centre, buying souvenirs for home and having their first experience of the Nottingham tram.

Saturday was full of excitement. They set off in the mini bus to Liverpool and went around the Liverpool Football Club museum. They had their photograph taken with the Champions League Trophy, which was a part of the day that Mr. Jones didn't find particularly interesting.  However his mood improved somewhat after a game of football in the park between the two stadiums of Liverpool and Everton. They then saw the Premiership game between Everton and Fulham. They were cheering the Everton team and were happy to see a 3-1 victory, Mr Jones went home with a big smile on his face.  You can read and see more photographs here.

Sunday and Monday were the chess days, with our Polish visitors playing in the Nottingham Open Chess Rapid Play at Bramcote as well as a match against our school team.  You can read more about those games here.

Tuesday was a last chance for sightseeing. They went to Stratford upon Avon and saw Shakespeare’s birthplace. In the evening they played chess at Gambit chess club and took part in a simultaneous event. They left on Wednesday morning.

Our own boys have gained a wonderful insight into a different culture, whilst at the same time sharing some of our own traditions.  The eight children and two teachers have been delightful guests and we have enjoyed seeing them throughout the week. We look forward to meeting them again – possibly on a trip in October when we intend to visit them in Poland!
