A Report On Year 3’s Visit To Snibston Discovery Park
By James Pownall 3A
On Thursday 2nd February, both year 3 classes and the teachers, Miss Abell, Mrs Whittamore and Mrs Cunningham went to Snibston Discovery Park. We went in a big silver coach, which had about 28 seats. It took about 50 minutes to get there. It costs £6:00 per child and £12:00 per adult (I think).
It was very cold, the floor was frozen, there were bits of ice on the ground and it started to snow. My ears felt like they would crack, but then we went inside.
First we went to the tables and had a snack from our lunch box. We went to the Rock Shop and Jean gave each table a plate of chocolates. We had to tell what chocolate was what, for example, an igneous rock and an iron meteorite. Next we drew some rocks and looked at rocks in a microscope.
After that Alwyn showed us the mine. There were two towers called Old Smokey and George Stevenson (sic). He brought us up a tower and he locked us in a cage! He told us that the cage went down at 30miles an hour and that really got me scared.
Alwyn took us out into the cold and then he took us to the control room. He showed us three models of people and he named them Fred, George and Bob. Fred was the boss and he used to walk up and down the mine inspecting everybody’s work. George listened to everybody in the mine, if there was danger and Bob gave everybody an oval token and a square token. They used to give the oval token to a man at the cage and then the other one when they came out.
Alwyn told us about the lamps and the safety things (which I do not know the name of). They fit over your face and you can breathe for 30 minutes. Next he told us that you have to wash your mouth out with smelly soap if you swear. We went to the hospital ward and there were more models. He told us that if you run in the mine you will break a bone and if you turned up with a black nail, the nurse would put a hole in your finger and let the black blood run out.
When we got to the shop I bought four smooth rocks and one smooth one and it only cost £4:00.
On the trip, I felt as excited as a lion about to eat and it was really, really great.
