Year 4 Ancient Egyptian Workshop

By Max Bowling

On the 7th March, Year 4 had their Ancient Egyptian Workshop. 4E had their turn in the morning and 4B had theirs in the afternoon. Mrs. Hopkins did the history workshop with us.

We started off by having a general discussion about the Ancient Egyptians. Then we dressed up in Egyptian tunics that Egyptian boys would have worn. They were fastened with a belt. It didn’t feel uncomfortable; it just felt like our normal school clothes.  Mrs. Hopkins then showed us some photos. They included photos of the pyramids, shabtis, canopic jars and hieroglyphics of food, gods, and daily life. We had a little discussion on each photo. I found it very interesting.

After we’d seen all the photos we did 5 different activities. Each activity was on a different table. The first activity was to sketch some ancient Egyptian artefacts. The eye of Horus, Anubis and an ankh were some of the artefacts. The second activity was to make an Egyptian necklace. We did this by wrapping colourful paper into a bead and putting it onto a string. The third activity was to fill in some blank boxes to complete the sentence about gods. The fourth activity was to write our names in hieroglyphics on papyrus. It was a lot more difficult writing on papyrus than paper. The last activity was to find out which foods the Egyptians ate and which they didn’t. We did each activity for 10 minutes.

I really enjoyed the workshop and I think that next year, the new Year 4 will enjoy it!
