Yr. 5 - Bosworth Visit

On Wednesday 20th September Year 5 went to Bosworth Battlefield in Leicestershire. 5S went on the tour while 5D went into the visitor centre. On the tour we went along the battlefield and were told where the three teams camped on the day before the battle. One of the three teams were The Stanleys who weren’t actually a team, their tactics were to join on to the winning side. The other sides were King Richard III (who ended up dying), and Henry Tudor (or Henry VII after the battle). We saw a stone were Richard III was supposed to have been slain and a well which was a spring back then. It was called Richard’s well because it was where Richard drank his last drink. After the tour we had lunch and went to the shop. Then we went to watch a short movie explaining about the Battle of Bosworth. After that we went to a weapons demonstration which was my favourite bit. I thought it was bit disgusting because the demonstrator said pitchforks were used to pull out peoples eyes. But it was cool to see all the weapons and how they were used. We got to use fake weapons and learn the commands that would have been used in battle.

We went to Bosworth Battlefield on Wednesday 20th September 2006. First we went round the field and saw lots of things like the last well King Richard III drank from. We also saw the monument of King Richard III it had some white roses in front of it and a sign saying This is where King Richard III, the last Plantagenet King, died. He died of a thousand stab wounds. The famous last words of King Richard III are "a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse".
A beggar was outside of King Richard's castle. She asked for some money and King Richard said no. She cursed him by saying that on his way out of Leicester he would catch his heel on the bridge and on his way back he would catch his head in the same place and he did.
We ate our lunch and then we went to watch a presentation about the battle. Then we were shown how to use the weapons, it was really good. We used some wooden axes and did some competitions in two teams.

Hi, I’m Rhys Ac Thomas and I’m one of Stanley’s men. I am here to report to you about the Battle of Bosworth. We have marched for day’s and I’m really tired, my feet are itching like mad! It’s morning now, didn’t have a good sleep because Henry VII and his men were getting their armour on and preparing for battle. I could see the Welsh dragon and Red rose flying down in the valley. I could see Richard III and his men almost opposite us and up on the banks of the valley (good position!). Richard should win because he had the high ground, had canons, more men, had the Duke of Norfolk and had the stronger cavalry. Richard’s archers started to fire arrows at Henry and he started to fire arrows back at them, Stanley ordered us to pull back a bit so that meant we didn’t get hit by the arrows. The sky turned black with arrows and Richard was over firing. I could see Richard’s men charging down the valley the ground shook like an earthquake. I suddenly saw Richard killing Henry’s standard-bearer and could no longer see the Welsh Dragon and the Red Rose flying. I heard Stanley shout “ A Stanley! A Stanley!” We charged down the valley heading towards Richard III. I couldn’t believe my eyes there he was Richard III King of England right in front of me. I rushed over to him when he wasn’t looking and I grabbed him around his neck and pulled him over to the floor. He was really heavy with all that armour on. There must have been over 1000 soldiers around him, I shouted “ The King is dead.” I was awarded a castle, my own army and a lot of money. My King is KING HENRY VII, the start of the Tudor period.

On Wednesday 20th September, Year 5 went to Bosworth Battlefield near Leicester. The trip included a tour of the battlefield and a 10-minute film of the battle, a trip to the Weapons tent and a look in the Visitors centre. We split up into two groups [5S, one group and 5D the other]. The guide [that showed us around the battlefield] gave us three banners [One for Henry Tudor, the second Richard Plantangenet and the third Thomas Stanley] that we held up as we marched around the battlefield. We stopped at intervals to discuss certain historical things. We stopped where Richard had died and Mrs Sweeney took a photo of us. We walked through a wood [Albion wood]; everybody picked up conkers and stuffed them in their pockets.
We had a break and had lunch, we were lucky because everyone else [other schools] were leaving when we started having lunch. After eating lunch everybody ran into the gift shop, spending a large amount of money! We switched over after lunch. The film was about; well I suppose you know, The Battle of Bosworth. The weapons tent was the best bit [by far] because a man showed you replicas of weapons you would’ve used in those days. We even got our hands on some! The man gave us a weapon [a model] like a pike, called a bill. We didn’t get to fight but we were showed the different positions your bill would have been in.
Last, but not least, The Visitors centre. In the Visitors centre we tried on the clothes and armour soldiers would have worn. The chain mail is really heavy, I had to ask two other people to put it on me!
Finally we’d finished our trip! It was an enjoyable and fun day out and I’d recommend it to everyone!
