Over the weekend of 14th/15th June 2008 over 40 former Nottingham High School pupils who were in the Upper Fifth Form in 1958 descended on the city from around the world to celebrate a reunion marking fifty years since they were at school together.
The 'NHS Upper Fifth of '58' reunions have been held every ten years since 1968, and all have reunited Old Nottinghamians from throughout the UK and abroad. On Friday, 13th June the reunion commenced with a visit of the School, followed by an inaugural dinner. On Saturday, 14th June, the former pupils attended the Founder's Day service at St Mary's Church in the Lace Market (where they were heard to remark that it was "a lot more interesting" than it had been in their schooldays), and many followed this with a visit to the Valley Road playing fields, where the School was hosting a number of cricket matches against local rival Trent College.
At the reunion dinner on Saturday night, attended not only by Old Nottinghamians and their wives, but also by several retired masters, Gillian Clarke, wife of MP and former Cabinet Minister, Kenneth Clarke, himself an Old Nottinghamian, spoke entertainingly about her life as a Minister's wife.
On Sunday there were visits to Calke Abbey and Southwell Workhouse for those who still had energy. All in all, a hectic schedule for anyone - but especially so if you've flown in from Canada, Sweden or South Africa!
Here's to the next reunion.....in 2018!
