On 19th June Mellers' House covered a huge 3m x 4m cloth map of Africa in loose coins donated by pupils and staff of the school. The coins, which amounted to £452, will be donated to the charity 'Bank for the Poor'.
The charity gives no interest micro-loans of £50 - £100 to individuals in less economically developed countries (LEDCs) to set up businesses. They then pay the loan back over two years from their profits, therefore releasing funds to help another individual. The loans are administered locally in the countries, most of which are in Africa.
The boys had a great time covering the map in loose change, as you can see from the photos! Many thanks to all who contributed - and to Mr Kilby and Mr Sedgewick for organising it - a great job!
