ON Andrew Turner won a Bronze Medal in the 110m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, only missing out on the silver by 1/100th of a second. Andy is now a full time athlete and is ranked number one in Great Britain.

Martin Smith, Head of the School's PE Department, has provided the following memories of Andy's time at the School:

At the Junior School he was an accomplished sportsman and was selected to play for the City Boys football team. Upon entering the Senior School he developed an interest in athletics and became a member of Notts AC.

Andy played rugby for the School and gained his 1st XV colours as an impressive winger.

His athletics began to flourish during his time at the School and was selected for his first English Schools’ championships aged 14. After slowly progressing during his teenage years in the hurdles he also competed to a high level in both the long and triple jump. In 1997  he won the Under 17 Schools title at Sheffield after a photo finish, in front of his proud parents as well as staff from School. Andrew was later that year selected to represent England Schools, he later presented his vest to the School which is proudly displayed at the Sports Hall along side his vest from the European Cup and the Athens Olympics. Andrew was Athletics captain in his final year at school and still holds a number of School and sports day records.

Andy's older brother Gary was also a very accomplished hurdler and rugby player at School and is now teaching in Cape Town. The 1st XV will be playing against his school, SACS, and the boys will be hosted by parents of the opposition on the forthcoming tour of South Africa this summer.

After Andy left School, Mr and Mrs Turner very kindly donated a trophy, the Turner Cup which is awarded annually to the best athlete.
