The Biological Society

Aims of the Biological Society

  • To develop an interest and enthusiasm for the study of Biology.

  • To allow students to appreciate work being done by professionals in the fields of Biology and Medicine, by inviting visiting speakers.

  • To encourage socialisation between Biologists from both NHS and NGHS.

  • To allow Year 13 students to elect a committee and organise the year’s events.

Organisation of the Biological Society

The Biological Society is open to any Biology student within years 11 to 13, either from our school, or NGHS. Meetings are advertised around both schools and attendance is encouraged within Biology lessons.

As much as possible of the organisation of the Biological Society is placed in the hands of the students themselves. It is hoped that students will get involved in organising social gatherings and the advertisement of meetings. Each year, a President of the Biological Society is elected, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of society activities. There will also be a Vice-President and a Secretary.

One of the major aims of the Biological Society is to expose pupils to a wide range of external lecturers. The Society attempts to book speakers on a regular basis, who will both advance pupils’ knowledge in specialist areas of Biology and, will challenge their preconceived ideas of the World around us.

Another aim of the Society is that pupils have a chance to undertake biological research. Opportunities may be provided for pupils to formulate their own hypotheses (perhaps linked to current issues in Biology) and to produce a suitable method to test their ideas practically. Advice and resources can be provided by members of the Biology Department, but the majority of the work is self-organised and self-motivated.
