International Chemistry Olympiad for UK Upper Sixth Students

Nottingham High School Chemists Achieve Excellent Results

Each year the Royal Society of Chemistry organises a Chemistry Olympiad aimed at the most able A-level students across the UK. This consists of written paper, of a much higher standard than AS or A2 examinations, taken in School.

RSC Olympiad 2010
Back: Chris Heining, Will Foster, Alex MacDonald, Mr. Heath.Front: George Bignall, Pruthvikar Reddy, Simon Berry, Vivek Chidambaram.

This academically challenging paper is written test of chemical knowledge, and quite an event in itself! Gold, silver, bronze and commendation certificates are awarded and prizes are given to the top 200 performers.

The questions posed often stimulate much debate on, and enthusiasm for, chemistry - raising awareness of what the subject is all about. Tackling the paper also provides a good opportunity to develop some of the skills required for study at university and beyond.

Congratulations to the all of the boys, studying A2 Chemistry here at NHS, who competed in Round 1 of the event this year.  The results were the best for the High School in many years with 4 boys achieving marks which place them in the top 200 Sixth-Form Chemists in the UK!

The following boys should be especially proud of their achievement of either a gold or silver award:

Gold Award Winners:

Vivek Chidambaram, Simon Berry, George Bignall, Pruthvikar Reddy (who also received a prize in recognition of their excellent performances).

Silver Award Winners:

Chris Heining, William Foster, Alex MacDonald.

Whilst these boys have also done extremely well to gain certificates as shown:

Bronze Award Winners:

William Robinson, Arun Nachiappan, Samuel Alton, Alexander Kawalec.

Commendation and Participation Award Winners:

Oscar Short, Louis Resnick, Karandeep Digva, Jordan Singh, Kishan Lakhani, George Watkinson, Andrew Gibson.
