Sport

Nottingham High School

Here at Nottingham High School we participate and challenge in a variety of sports.

Please download the below pdf for information on sports fixtures during Summer Term 2016.

Summer Term Fixtures

Please remember pupils should not travel home with other parents from away fixtures unless the member of staff has been informed beforehand that permission had been given.

The sports on offer include:

Athletics

Athletics takes place primarily in the summer term with many inter school fixtures as well as an internal house standards competition. Sports Day is held at our Valley Road playing fields with over 400 pupils competing in 64 traditional events.

During the winter, the school enters teams into the Nottingham City indoor championships at which we have been very successful in recent years with teams going on to represent the City at the County final.

Facilities at the playing fields include a grass track, throwing and jumping areas including pole vault. Athletics is a summer term option for those not selected in a cricket team.

Cross Country

Students can participate in cross country in both the Autumn and Spring terms. It is a sport for both boys and girls and for age groups from year 7 to year 13.

The Junior teams compete in local league fixtures and fixtures against other Independent schools across the Midlands as well as entering the national schools cup competition. The senior teams compete in the Birmingham league, the East Midlands Independent Schools league and fixtures against other independent schools.

Football

Football takes place during the Autumn and Spring Terms as a Sixth Form Games option.  We are fortunate to be able to use the excellent facilities at Beeston Hockey Club, where we have access both to full sized pitches and pitches which are well suited to small-sided games.

Matches are played on Wednesday afternoons and we operate a full fixture list, consisting largely of friendly matches against local schools and colleges, including Bilborough College and New College, Nottingham.  We also play in the U19 John Fox County Cup.  The annual house football competition, which scores points towards the Wheeler Cup, is played at the Power League 5-a-side centre and involves the majority of those players for whom football is their Games option.

Hockey

Hockey is the School’s main sport during the Autumn Term for girls and during the Spring Term for boys, with up to 12 teams representing the School each week. Fixtures are played against a number of the Midlands hockey playing schools, both on Saturdays and midweek.

In addition, the School annually enters the National Schools’ Competitions and the Nottinghamshire County competitions, as well as supporting the Central Venue League.

All students will have the opportunity to represent the School in inter-school matches, their House in inter-House matches, or simply experience the sport as a means of a games and recreation activity. A number of our students go on to play club hockey as well as representative hockey at a County, regional or national level.

Games sessions take place on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday every week, with additional sessions held after school which focus on the team and the individual player’s development, tactical awareness and game management.

Elite players are supported with entry into the England Hockey 'Single System', where they continue to develop their skills in local regional performance academies (JDC, JAC, JRPC, and Futures Cup). Residential UK and tours abroad will be offered to pupils.

Netball

Netball is offered as an extra-curricular activity in the Autumn term for the girls U14, U16 and U19 squads. Fixtures for these squads will also take place mid-week during this term in preparation for the County Tournaments.

We enter the Nottinghamshire School County tournament with all age groups and the Independent Schools Cup with U13, U15 and U19. In the Spring term, Netball is the major sport which will takes place in Games lessons and fixtures will be mid-week and on Saturdays.

There will also be a House competition which will involve most pupils. Opportunities for residential tours in the UK and abroad will also be on offer.

Rounders

Rounders is offered in the Summer Term to girls. Fixtures will take place midweek and on Saturdays. There is also a house competition that will involve most pupils.

Rugby

Rugby is played at all age groups in the School. It is the major Autumn Term sport for boys. We currently run 4 teams at Y7 and Y8 and have A and B teams in year 9, 10 and 11. At Sixth Form we have 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs.

The game is taught to all boys in a way to maximise participation at an appropriate level. The basics of the game are covered by experienced staff with all pupils, and in depth coaching is available to those who wish to further their knowledge and expertise as part of the competitive inter-school element.

Fixtures are played against both local schools and similar HMC schools in the Midlands and North of England. Recent professional players that attended Nottingham High School include Scotland international Greig Tonks and London Irish winger Alex Lewington.

Tennis

Tennis takes place primarily in the summer term for all age groups. During the autumn term, the school enters a senior team in the AEGON Team Tennis Senior Student competition.

Facilities used for tennis include three newly resurfaced tennis courts at Valley Road playing fields, David Lloyd indoor tennis courts and the outdoor tennis courts at Nottingham Girls’ High School. Tennis is a summer option for those not selected in a cricket team.

Games sessions take place on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday every week. Fixtures are played against a number of the Midlands schools, both on Saturdays and midweek. In addition, the School annually enters:

Cricket

Cricket is played at all age groups in the School and is the main sport for boys in the Summer Term. We currently run 3 teams at all age groups from Year 7-Year 10 and a further 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI’s at Senior level (Years 11-13). The game is taught to nearly all boys in Year 7 to maximise participation at an appropriate level. The basics of the game are taught at all levels by experienced staff, whilst in-depth coaching is available to those who wish to further their knowledge and expertise as part of the competitive inter-school element.

The majority of fixtures are played against similar HMC schools across the Midlands and North of England; however, midweek fixtures against local schools are also arranged as part of the various NSCA County Schools Cups. Having often gained the honour as County Champions from the previous season, our U13 and U15 teams then often represent Nottinghamshire in the ESCA National Schools Cups, proudly reaching the Midlands Semi-Final at Under 13 level in 2015.

The Under 12 and Under 13 teams enjoy an annual residential cricket tour to the Northwest of England, whilst the Under 15 team plays in a 3 day festival which alternates its location between a group of schools over a four year cycle. In 2013, the High School’s senior cricketers enjoyed a 10 night tour of Sri Lanka, during which they had the privilege of playing at the Galle Test Stadium. Members of the next cohort are eagerly awaiting their tour of Barbados & St. Lucia in July 2017.

A number of our pupils go on to play County Age Group cricket, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Anuj Dal who left the High School in 2013 to become a full time professional cricketer with Nottinghamshire CCC.
