The Combined Cadet Force is a Ministry of Defence sponsored youth organisation, with the aim of "providing a disciplined organisation in a school so that pupils may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance". There has been a CCF at Nottingham High School since the 1940s and including its predecessor, the Officers Training Corps, its history goes back for over 100 years. During the 2nd World War an Air Training Squadron was formed, and the two sections merged in 1948 to form the CCF with a Royal Naval Section being added in 1954 to the RAF and Army sections.
All boys in years 10 and 11 have to opt to take part in a service activity, and the CCF is usually the most popular of the available options. Also, a significant number of cadets continue as NCOs in the sixth form, which is optional.
The CCF parades from 1605 to approximately 1730 on a Monday evening, with two field days held each year, one in the Autumn term and one in the Summer term. Our Inspection day is held in March each year.
Training is coordinated by our number of officers to whom we are very grateful for giving up their time.
Cadets take part in Armed Forces celebrations
Every year leading up to and on the 27 June, events take place across the country in celebration of all British soldiers and veterans. The purpose of the day is to celebrate, honour and unite all veterans and serving soldiers, and recognise the contribution they make to society, both in and out of service.
This year on Tuesday 22nd June, Lt. James Knight, accompanied by Army Cadet Sergeant Jamie Webb-Bowen, RAF Cadet Warrant Officer Richard Cotton and Navy Cadet Able Seaman Joe Rudin, proudly took part in a special 'Fly a Flag for Armed Forces Day'. Arriving by boat alongside the steps of County Hall Lt Knight and the cadets, together with senior veteran Colin Broughton, handed over the Armed Forces flag to Sir Andrew Buchanan, Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire.
The special 'Fly a Flag' event was followed by the annual Armed Forces Day celebrations at Wollaton Park on the 27th June.
