Adventurous Training

Trail Biking
Trail Biking

Adventurous training (AT) is a key part of the CCF, and cadets from all sections have many opportunities to take part in this. The schools runs several expeditions to Scotland and the Lake District, as well as an annual trip to Lake Bala over the summer holidays, for pupils entering year 10. Also, there are many other opportunities for adventurous training with courses available, and days on annual camp devoted to AT. Activities on offer vary widely, and can include mountain walking, trail/mountain biking, climbing, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, archery, kayaking, or orienteering.

Lake Bala Expedition

In the summer we shall be organising our customary adventurous training week for the boys currently in year 9.

The expedition will offer limited places to pupils, places available will depend upon the volume of interest. We will be based at Bala in Mid Wales. The aim of the week will be to introduce the boys to camping and outdoor pursuits. The programme will include, where possible depending of staff availability and weather, a selection of the following activities: mountain walking, rock climbing, map reading, orienteering, canoeing, swimming, mountain biking, instructions on camp craft and the week finishes with the pupils walking a route on their own. Staff at Nottingham High School possesses all the relevant qualifications and/or experience enabling us to offer such a varied choice of activities.

The school will provide all the necessary transport and camping equipment for the week. However, there are a few items of personal kit each boy will need to provide for himself: a pair of good walking boots, walking socks, sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, rucksack and water proof clothing Gore-Tex or a similar quality. These items will be assessed by staff as to their suitability. Boys wishing to take part also require a reasonable standard of fitness, as the week is moderately demanding.

The event will cost £210 per boy plus a few pounds for pocket money. We believe this represents excellent value for money covering all activities, equipment and transport and is a fantastic opportunity for pupils at Nottingham High School.

In the past, the adventurous training week has been a great success and I can thoroughly recommend the venture, which should prove to be both challenging and enjoyable. If you would like your son to be considered, please complete the attached form and return it to me as soon as possible, and certainly no later that Friday 11 th December, 2009. Please return the form with a non-refundable deposit of £50. This will bereturned if your son fails toobtain a place. Successful applicants will be informed in the New Year. The parents of all boys selected will be asked to sign and return the usual School consent form.

Any parent who is put off by the expense involved (including the purchase of personal equipment) is reminded that assistance may be available from the David Leicester Memorial Fund. All enquiries concerning this fund should be made direct to me, and will be dealt with in strictest confidence.
