Gliding at RAF Syerston
Gliding at RAF Syerston

The Royal Air Force Section gives pupils the opportunity to develop themselves while experiencing activities they would not normally be able to do, or at as little the cost. The section consists of around 70 cadets and 4 officers and is open to all pupils in Year 10 and above as a part of their service option. The aim of the CCF RAF Section is to develop qualities of leadership, self-discipline and self-confidence through a wide range of activities including flying, gliding, military skills, and tri-service adventurous training and shooting activities run with the Army and RN sections. For more details of these please see the appropriate pages.

The CCF section meets every Monday Evening between 1605 and 1730, and also has 2 field days. One in held in the Autumn Term and the other in the Summer term, with cadets taking part in a day of planned activities based on the RAF syllabus and relevant to their training. On Field Days, we take part in a wide variety of activities, ranging from visiting an RAF base and experiencing daily life in the air force, and shooting in laser ranges to performing night exercises and learning basic fieldcraft. On the last Field Day, all the Year 11s got to travel to RAF Odiham. This was a thoroughly enjoyable trip in which they got to fly over London and the White Cliffs of Dover in a Chinook helicopter as well as shooting on DCCT laser ranges.

There is also an annual inspection day in the Spring Term where the contingent is inspected and reviewed by a senior forces officer, and cadets take part in training activities with all three services, as well as competitions and a final parade.

On a typical Monday evening a cadet can expect to take part in drill practice, formal training, command tasks, team planning exercises and sport, and we also make good use of the 25m indoor shooting range at school, as well as other facilities such as the sports hall, swimming pool, gym, and climbing wall.

Camps/Courses

In the RAF, everyone is encouraged to go on various courses that are both cheap and extremely fun: this could be in the form of the annual Summer Camp, an Air Cadet Leadership Course or a gliding scholarship in which you can even learn to fly solo! In Summer 2009 we visited RAF Marham with 30 cadets for a very enjoyable week.

If you have any questions about the RAF section please see Pilot Officer Nigel Key in the security office.
