Reading Groups launched

The Knife of Never Letting Go

Meeting on Thursdays, third break in the Library

In partnership with the English Department a new Reading Group has started in the Library. ‘Brilliant Books for Boys’. Hoping to try new things and find some great fiction, we’ve decided to shadow some of the book awards that are happening this year.   At present we are looking at both the Carnegie Prize and the Greenaway Prize for Book Illustration.

The Carnegie Short List

Airman by Eoin Colfer

Black Rabbit Summer by Kevin Brooks

Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd

Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

Creature of the Night by Kate Thompson

Ostrich Boys by Keith Grey

Previously......

The Nottingham Brilliant Book Awards has been running for several years and has the advantage that the prize is determined by young people’s votes rather than an adult panel.  It is supported by a great website:

 www.brilliantbookaward.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/

The short list is just published and the voting takes place in mid-March so we have plenty of time to read the books and make our choice.  We can submit our brief reviews to the website and read about what other school and library groups are enjoying.

This years’ short list:

The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd

Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy

The Declaration by Gemma Malley

Ways to Live Forever by Sally Nichols

Here Lies Arthur by Phillip Reeve

The Shade of Hettie Daynes by Robert Swindells

For our slightly olderMission Impossible’ group, we’ve decided to look at the The Guardian Children’s Fiction Award shortlist, although the Winner has been announced:

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce

Before I Die by Jenny Downham

Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd

This is a shorter list and we are planning to shadow the Carnegie Prize as soon as the long list is published next spring.

Attendance is informal and everyone is welcome!
