School Archives

Documents in the archive record the history of Nottingham High School since its foundation in 1513 by Dame Agnes Mellers.

They are currently housed in the library and include admissions ledgers, which record all pupils who attended the school from 1807, when it was known as 'The Free Grammar School', until the present day.  All scholars who attend the school are still recorded in this way.

Also included in the archives are many photographs, some dating from the 1880's, our School Record, School Magazine, maps, artefacts, and many other items which reflect daily life at school.

Exhibitions are regularly displayed in the library.

We are happy to accept any material which has a connection to the school.  Please contact the Librarian and Archivist, Yvette Gunther.

We have recently undertaken a project to restore the remaining seven books that constituted the original library at the High School.

The Library was founded due to a bequest from Alderman J Parker in his will dated October 1693. He asked that certain funds were to be used for the establishment and maintenance of a library, 'for the use and benefit of the master and scholars of the free-school in Nottingham'. Altogether twelve books were purchased in 1707 and we have seven still in our archives today.

The first restored book, a Greek/Latin Dictionary, published in 1628, is currently on display.
