Bridge Cup 2010 - House Choirs

Mellers' choir
Mellers' choir singing their hearts out!

On Tuesday, 9th March, the Bridge Cup Music Finals got off to a rousing start with the House Choir Competition. Each choir performed a four-part A Cappella arrangement to the whole school.  This year the standard of performance by each choir was exceptionally high and all four ensembles were well-prepared and expertly lead by their four conductors: Fergal Duggan, David Jones, Oliver Metcalfe and George Watkinson.

We were delighted to welcome Amanda Lapwood, Director of Music at Chigwell School in Essex, as our visiting adjudicator. Amanda spent the next two days judging the individual performance competitions and commented that she was impressed by the professional levels of performance attained by boys across the Senior School in categories covering all instruments from organ to electric guitar.  We now look forward to the Prizewinners’ Concert on Wednesday when we hear the winners from each category performing their solos.

On Thursday, the House Verse-speaking choirs took to the stage. In a change to previous years, the competition was this year judged internally, with 4 members of staff representing each of the 4 houses judging the choirs.

Once again, the standard was extremely high, and the judges struggled to separate the choirs. In the end, though, they were unanimous in their decision, awarding first place to Mellers' for their splendid rendition of "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

The final results were:

1st - Mellers', 2nd - Maples', 3rd - White's, 4th - Cooper's.
