A healthy mind in a healthy body.

Nottingham High School recognises the importance of providing a healthy competitive environment where all students can enjoy and thrive. Competition creates the ideal context for young people to explore their personal values and conduct, learn how to handle victory and defeat, how to believe in their abilities and achieve their personal best, and how to respect their opponents and work with their teammates to achieve success. Students, teachers, team managers, Coaches, parents and guardians are asked to uphold the School Values which underpin our Sporting Code of Conduct.

The School Values are:

• Respect • Individuality • Empathy • Curiosity • Excellence

Sport for all.

The benefits of sport are well documented: improved self-esteem and confidence, a healthy mind and a healthy body. Sport teaches us about teamwork, to be gracious in victory and resilient in defeat. It is social, a great leveller and a wholesome way to counter life’s pressures.

At Nottingham High School there are a multitude of sporting opportunities available to students, both within Games lessons and through our extensive co-curricular programme. Whether students aspire to play for a national side or just want to keep fit, they have access to a standard of coaching and competition to match their ability and interest. Students here can experience the exhilaration of playing their hearts out for house or school, cheered on by friends and family, or try something a little more casual. Some of the sports on offer at Nottingham High School include:

Athletics, Cross Country, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rounders, Rugby, Tennis, Cricket…

…As well as a whole host of others available through our co-curricular programme.

Fitness Suite.

Gym

Our Fitness Suite inspires students and staff to become more physically active, to not only improve personal health and fitness but to also prepare for the demands of school sport. It is well-equipped with free-weights and a range of functional training equipment, including a custom-made rig which allows for multiple exercises to be trained at one time – perfect for circuit and group training. Alongside a stepper, treadmills and rowing machines, there are professional standard WattBikes and Ski-ergometers.

Every student from Year 7 to 10 utilises the Fitness Suite at some point during the academic year. The majority will spend time developing an understanding of the components of fitness and how they can be trained in a gym environment during Health Related Fitness (HRF) blocks. Senior students may choose to use the fitness suite as part of their Games option, and Year 12 and 13 students can take advantage of free periods to work on their personal fitness. From Year 8, students are invited to use the fitness suite both before school and at lunch time, too. All forms of training take place under the supervision of the school’s Athletic Development Coach and other members of the PE department. There are programmes available for students to work from and students can get advice in relation to all aspects of health and fitness.
