Many boys, like you, might think that when you join the High School you are going to get loads of homework and it is going to be a big problem, but it isn’t! When you first look at your timetable and see how much homework there is, you think, oh no, how am I going to do all this! However, when you get down to it, it is quite easy and as you settle in to the school you realise it is not much trouble.
In the first two weeks of the autumn term you get absolutely NO homework to let you settle in to the school. Some days you don’t get much homework (which are the best days!) but sometimes you get three pieces (the bad days) but even on the bad days the teachers give you plenty of time.
When you do the homework all you need is a bit of concentration and determination (even if you have a brother or sister who annoys you!) so you can get it done quickly and well allowing you to watch your favourite programmes like the Simpsons. And a tip, always do your homework as soon as possible and don’t leave it to the last minute as this increases the pressure on you and you will not be able to make such a good job of it.
Another tip is do the homework as soon as you get home (after tea if you like) even if you don’t feel like it because you’re still in a working mood and you will be able to do it better and faster.
You should do about half an hour for each subject. However, most of the time it may not take as long either because the homework is short and simple or the teacher has forgotten to give any! The difference is normally made up because another teacher might give you extra-unscheduled homework or you may have to revise for a test or do a project.
These half hour homeworks are in most of the subjects such as French, R.E, Latin, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and D.T but sometimes you can be given ICT. Maths you get one normal homework and a shorter 15-minute one. English should take 45 minutes so you have enough time to write a decent essay.
I found that it wasn’t too difficult to start the homework after a couple of weeks. The reason for that is, you eventually got used to the type and amount of work you were doing in class, which I found was a help to me. If you have problems with your homework it is good because you can talk to the teacher involved as well as your: form teacher, tutor, peers and parents to help sort out the problem.
You will also be issued with a planner for you to record and write notes on your upcoming homework. Your planner will also have to be signed by your parent / guardian and your tutor to check that you are doing your homework, properly and on time. Teachers may also request to look at your planner to again check that you are doing and recording your homework properly.
