Houses

At Nottingham High School there four houses.   Each house is represented by a colour.  These are the four houses together with their colours:

Cooper’s = Blue
Maples = Green
Mellers = Purple
White’s = Red

Every new boy will be put into one of these houses.  That house is the one you will stay in for the rest of your academic career.  If you have an older brother in the school you will be put in the same house as him.  Each house has its own house prefects and a house master.

Every House in the school is split up into tutor sets.  This run by your tutor and deputy tutor.  You will be put into the same tutor set as your brother, if you have one, and you will remain in that tutor set until you leave school.

During your time at the school there will be occasions when you will compete for Cups and prizes for your house.  Take the Bridge Cup for example, (this is the cup for Music) you and the rest of your house will compete to earn points.  Whether you get involved in a house choir or you play a musical instrument you will earn points for your house.  Obviously the house that earns the most points wins the cup.

The Wheeler Cup is the most important cup.  Every point you earn for your house will go towards. this.  Whether it be from swimming standards to athletics standards every point earned decides which house wins the overall Cup.  The Wheeler Cup is presented, in assembly at the end of the year, to the house that wins.  It is also presented to the winning house at Speech Day.

The first event you will take part in is the Cross Country at which is enjoyable. I finished fourth and earned myself a house certificate that is the equivalent to a distinction. You can receive a certificate for doing well in events.

In the spring term is house rugby and I captained my house team. Then soon after follows swimming standards and the Bridge Cup, which I will explain later. Athletic standards is soon after, which is where you try all kinds of athletic events for example: l00 metres, l500 metres, high jump, triple jump, discus, javelin and lots more, but there's more to taking part in the event because you can still earn points for your house even if you don't win.  5 points is the best you can get and 0 the worst.  That's not the last you'll see of athletics, straight after the Easter holidays comes Sports Day, which is fun and enjoyable if it happens to be a sunny day. Then follows house cricket in the summer.

All houses throughout the year normally hold and organise fund raising events for their selected charity of charities for instance JackDawes (Coopers) These fund raising ideas could be as simple as a sponsored spell or discos and for those of you who are keen on running there are the fun runs.  You can gain another house certificate for raising a substantial amount of money for charity.  However the idea of houses is working for a team and not individual rewards.
