The Arts Society

The Arts Society arranges trips to plays, concerts, museums and art galleries in addition to occasional lunchtime meetings addressed by speakers both from inside the school and outside. It also encourages girls from NGHS to participate.

Altogether the Arts Society arranges about 25events each year, offering tickets at greatly reduced prices. In the past twelve months about 2000 tickets have been distributed for plays, concerts, operas and ballets. Although all these events are open to all members of the school, we very much hope that they will be of particular interest to those studying English in the sixth form. Not only are the events enjoyable in themselves, but they give the texts the boys are studying a cultural context and provide a wider frame of reference. We have repeatedly found that when regular participants face university interviews, they have been grateful that they have had so many artistic experiences to discuss.

Last term’s programme consisted of 7 plays: The Hound of the Baskervilles, Amadeus, Frankenstein, A Passage to India, Hamlet, Journey’s End and The Tempest, as well as Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte, a concert given by the Hallé Orchestra and this year’s Playhouse pantomime Sleeping Beauty.

This term trips have been arranged to three concerts (the Northern Sinfonia, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Bournemouth Symphony), a play (Playboy of the West Indies), Charlie Chaplin films with live orchestra accompaniment, a ballet version of La Traviata, an opera (Don Giovanni) and a one-man show (Tony Robinson's Cunning Night Out).

Full details of each term’s programme are posted on the What’s On board together with booking forms.
