GCSE Coursework

There are five pieces of coursework, usually completed in the first two terms of Year 10.  These consist of:
1.  Imaginative/Personal writing (English)
2.  Response to media texts, such as newspapers, television, film, radio (English)
3.  Work based on a play by Shakespeare (English and English Literature)
4.  A response to a collection of poetry written before 1914 (English Literature)
5.  Work on a prose text (a novel or collection of short stories) written before 1914
                        (English Literature)
You will be expected to have completed each essay by the following dates: September 27, November 1, November 22, January 14 and February 4 (although the final piece may be left until later in the course.)
In Year 11 your coursework folder has to be ready for internal moderation by the end of February.  During the Easter holiday the exam board tells us which candidates’ work is required by the external Moderator.  Candidates’ work is chosen at random.
In English, written coursework counts for 20% of the total mark.  Another 20% is gained through Speaking and Listening exercises, such as a talk to the class, a small-group discussion and a role-playing activity.
In English Literature coursework counts for 30% of the total mark.
More information about coursework can be found on the examination board’s website at www.edexcel.org.uk
