Fieldwork is not seen as an 'optional extra' to our curriculum in geography.

We provide the opportunity for our pupils to experience the educational benefits associated with fieldwork both in the local area and at distances from the school.

Fieldwork based on careful preparation allows pupils to:
  • Carry out investigations with clear objectives in response to key questions to improve their understanding and develop skills.
  • Collect relevant data, make comparisons and appreciate the values of people, when comparisons are made.
  • Work individually and co-operatively in a group.
  • Support thematic studies, by incorporating secondary sources, maps and diagrams together with their first hand experiences.

 Pupils are encouraged to:
  • Record information in varied and appropriate ways (worksheets, surveys, questionnaires, digital photography, field sketches etc).
  • Organise and present their findings clearly engaging in drafting and editing as appropriate.
  • Draw conclusions and evaluate their success.

  Progression will be demonstrated through:
  • Increased spatial scale and movement to more unfamiliar locations.
  • Increasing sophistication in analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Increasing complexity of ideas and techniques.
