Year 7 Curriculum
 
In Year 7 the focus of our study is British History 1066-1485. This encompasses the following main subject areas:
 
  • The Norman Conquest 1066
  • The establishment of Norman rule over England (including the Feudal System and the Domesday Book)
  • Medieval Life
    • Life in towns and villages
    • Justice in Medieval
    • Religion in Medieval
  • Medieval Castles
    • The development of castles (motte and bailey to stone concentric castles)
    • Attacking and defending a Medieval castle
  • Henry II and Thomas Becket
  • King John and the Magna Carta
  • Edward I and the invasion of Wales
  • Edward II and Scotland (especially the Battle of Bannockburn)
  • The Black Death and the Peasants’ Revolt
 
In addition all boys in year 7 go on a joint curriculum visit with the Religious Studies department to Lincoln Castle and Cathedral.
 
Boys should develop and consolidate the following skills over the year:
           
  • Develop a sense of chronology and a framework for history within the area of study
  • Use short to mid-sized historical texts to extract and assimilate information
  • Become skilled in writing accurate and precise answers to short and medium sized answers which have a direct focus.
  • Writing guided, structured essays (e.g. with writing frames, etc;)
  • Making complex decisions based on a number of criteria and to explain this in a rational, thoughtful and reasoned way.
  • Handling historical sources in a meaningful way both as sources of information and as opportunities for evaluation
  • Begin to use opportunities for independent research and to assimilate information from this.
  • Building on the ICT work done throughout the year (in ICT lessons) to consolidate pupils’ familiarity and use of computers as a tool for learning.
  • Discuss in a productive and sensible way historical issues, e.g. constructive pair work.
  • Listen to and contribute to wider class discussions in a constructive sensible manner
