Design a Dunkirk Newspaper

Operation Dynamo is Dynamite!

  • Your task is to design and write a newspaper front page that summarises and celebrates the end of the evacuation of Allied forces from the beaches of Dunkirk (‘Operation Dynamo’).

  • The date of your newspaper front page should therefore by June 4th or 5th 1940 (the end of the evacuation).

  • You should write and construct your newspaper front page using one of the word document templates below (if you have the word-processing ability to do so then feel free to edit the template however you wish)

You should include the following on your front page:

  1. A newspaper name (sensible please)
  2. A date
  3. A headline
  4. A summary of what has happened in your own words with some facts and figures relating to the evacuation
  5. Some quotations from soldiers, sailors or leaders about the evacuation (you can use actual quotes you find in your book or on the internet or make up your own)
  6. At least one picture with a caption (search on internet – e.g. using ‘Google Images’)

Please use colour and make it look as attractive, yet detailed and informative, as possible. We want to display these on Open Day.

Please also think about the ‘tone’ of your newspaper report – most news reports at the time presented Dunkirk as a ‘victory’ for the Allies in an attempt to keep the British peoples’ morale high

Resources you can use:

  • Pages 158-161 in your ‘Peace and War’ textbook

(all the above website links have information about the evacuation, some pictures and interviews with people who were actually there).

(a good place to search for pictures for your front page).

When you have finished your front page, print if off using the colour printer and write your name on the back.
