Orienteering is an outdoor sport where you navigate your way at your own pace between control markers on a set course using a special map and a compass. It is like a cross-country race but you have to do your own navigation instead of following a set course.

Orienteering is a sport in which, according to the Sports Council, 1 in 10 schools participates in one form or another. Over 1200 schoolchildren competed at last years British Schools Championships.

Nottingham High School has been regularly competing at events for over 15 years. Most of the Orienteering team have done little or no Orienteering before joining the school, but we have regularly won age classes at the British Schools Orienteering Championships. We have twice provided the school team to represent England at the World Schools Meeting. 4 of our former pupils have run for the English Schools select teams. In addition 3 of our former pupils have run for England, one of whom, Andrew Llewellyn, has also represented Great Britain.

British Sprint Championship 2006
James Taylor of year 9 finished 2nd in the junior age class.  The event consisted of a heat of 3 km and a final of 3.5 km.  James was up against pupils over 4 years older than himself,  (The event was in fact won by an 18 year old), so this was an outstanding performance.
