STEM
At Nottingham High Infant and Junior school, we aim to provide an exciting range of scientific experiences to our children that provide many ‘wow’ moments that remain with them over their time at the school.
We start by building on children’s natural curiosity, helping them to develop a scientific approach to problems by using first hand and secondary sources to obtain information and present this information in a number of ways through simple drawings, diagrams, charts and tables. We then continue to build upon these skills and prepare our children to independently think, plan and investigate their ideas in a safe and secure environment.
Bringing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths together is something we like to do across our Infant and School and children at KS2 are given the opportunity to attend STEAM club where further skills are interests in Science and Technology are explored.
In the early years, children are taught practically through a range of different topics, learning about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. From Key Stage 1, we follow the National Curriculum, basing our topics under the main sciences of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Children are given opportunities to:
- Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others.
- Ask scientific questions and predict the outcomes.
- Carry out tasks carefully with due respect to equipment and others.
- Observe carefully and collect data.
- Analyse and interpret the data.
- Evaluate and draw conclusions.
The investigative work is one of the most important tools used to help gain the important scientific knowledge the children need to acquire whilst at the Infant and Junior School. Children make progress in both their scientific knowledge and investigative skills in order for a successful transition to the Senior School.
