Our Super Curriculum: Taking Learning Beyond the Classroom 

At Nottingham High School, we believe that education should inspire. That’s why we place so much importance on our Super Curriculum: a bold and enriching approach that takes learning beyond the classroom. 

What Is the Super Curriculum? 

The Super Curriculum refers to academic activities that go above and beyond what students typically learn in lessons. It’s about nurturing intellectual curiosity and equipping students with the skills they need to thrive now and in the future. 

Why Does It Matter for Your Child? 

The super-curriculum enriches your child’s education by encouraging deeper thinking and a love of learning. It helps them to:

The Super Curriculum in Action: What Does it Look Like Across our School? 

Our Super Curriculum is the lifeblood of our school, rather than being an ‘optional extra’. We focus on four key areas to maximise its impact: 

Stretch & Challenge 

We want every child to experience intellectual challenge. This doesn’t mean doing more; it means going deeper. We provide thought-provoking extension activities and embed challenge at every level of learning to encourage students to explore what’s next, not just what’s now. 

Cultural Literacy 

Our emphasis on contextualising our learning encourages our pupils to proactively engage with the world around them, developing empathy and awareness. Rather than limiting students to a narrow set of ‘classics’, we offer opportunities to engage with a wide range of voices, ensuring every pupil feels seen and represented. 

Information Literacy 

In an age of AI and information overload, we help our pupils to become discerning readers and researchers, able to find trustworthy sources and analyse them critically. Through intentionally reading for both purpose and pleasure, we aim to balance academic rigour with rich contexts, essential for success in a rapidly evolving world. 

Independent Learning 

Our teachers act as mentors and guides, modelling effective learning strategies and providing tailored support across all subjects. Through structured challenges and opportunities for self-directed projects, students gradually become confident, self-regulating learners. This approach ensures they leave academically prepared, and equipped with the skills and mindset needed for lifelong learning and success beyond school.
