- Admissions Process
Nottingham High Senior School educates children from Year 7 to Year 13, and welcome new students in Years 7-10, and into Year 12, subject to availability.
We have an array of opportunities for both parents and children to explore the school, meet teachers and current pupils, and get involved in lots of exciting activities along the way.
The first step in the process is submitting an Online Enquiry. At this point you can also sign up for an event, request a tour or order a prospectus pack. There’s no obligation to continue with an application at this stage, it is just an opportunity to find out more information about the school and request a visit if you so choose. We recommend doing this as soon as possible if you think you may be interested in joining us, as we will then be able to keep you up-to-date with deadlines and upcoming events that may be of interest.
Our annual Open Day will be taking place on 19th September 2026. To register please fill out our enquiry form.
Our Sixth Form Open Evening is taking place in October 2026. Find out more about our successful and inspiring Sixth Form environment, and speak with our teaching specialists in our Subject Marketplace to discuss A Level options. To register please fill out our enquiry form.

Senior School Assessment
Our main entrance assessments take place in January, consisting of a verbal and non-verbal Reasoning test done on a computer, a Mathematics paper and an English paper. Following on from this, a selection of students are invited in for an interview and the final offers are made in the following fortnight.
Sixth Form Assessment
The Sixth Form at Nottingham High School educates students in Year 12 and 13, and welcomes new students into Year 12.
Joining the Sixth Form is by interview and on the basis of academic achievement at GCSE. Applicants are invited to interview following a report from their current school indicating their predicted GCSE grades. The likely offer made, following a successful interview, will be conditional on a minimum of 5 A / 7 grades, with A / 7 grades in the subjects to be taken in the Sixth Form.
If your child shines in the entrance assessment, you’ll soon receive an offer letter delivered straight to your inbox or mailbox!
To secure your child’s place at our School, simply return the acceptance form and pay the £800 deposit. (Bursary students are not required to pay a deposit.)
We can’t wait to welcome your family to our vibrant community.
Once we have received your acceptance form and deposit, you will promptly receive our comprehensive Parents’ Welcome Guide. This guide will help you prepare for a smooth and successful start at our School.
Tuition fees are due before the start of each term and are paid by Direct Debit. Bursaries and scholarships
There are a number of different types of financial assistance available at Nottingham High School. Please be aware that all of the below options are only available when applying for a Year 7 place. Then, subject to ongoing assessment of finances, any bursary or scholarship awarded continues throughout the child’s time at Nottingham High School.
Bursary scheme
Nottingham High School operates a bursary support scheme for pupils entering the school at age 11 into Year 7. Bursaries are means-tested based on parental income, and may cover the full or partial cost of tuition fees. Awards of Bursaries will be calculated on an annual basis, and parents will be required to submit details of their finances each May or June. Parents who wish their child to be considered for a Bursary must be prepared to provide confidential information concerning their financial situation.
BURSARY APPLICATION PROCESS
- Fill out our application form and tick the box for a ‘bursary-assisted place’. Submit this by 1st November when your child is in Year 6, at the latest. (For example, if you are applying for your child to start in Year 7 at Nottingham High School in 2025, you will need to submit your application form by 1st November 2024 at the latest.)
- In early November we will send out our bursary forms to all applicants. This will ask for full details of your financial circumstances, and will also require you to support these with documentary evidence, submitted by the required deadline.
- In January your child will sit our entrance assessment. We award bursary places according to the pupils’ ranking in the assessment and interview, and allocate funds based on the family’s financial circumstances.
- Shortly after the entrance assessment process we will let you know if your application has been successful.
For further information please see our Bursary FAQs.
Scholarships
SCHOLARSHIP TYPES
Academic Part Scholarships do not come with a financial element but will be awarded on a honorary basis to the top performing students at the end of Year 7. These cannot be applied for – every student who joins Year 7 will be entered for this. These are known as the Sir Thomas White entrance scholarships.
Music Scholarship auditions are held within the Music department during the first term of Year 7. As a guide, pupils should be around Grade 4 standard or higher on their principal instrument in order to apply (although they need not have the official examined grades).
Extra Help
The School has a small source of funds upon which it can draw to provide support for uniform, school trips and similar costs. Priority will be given to supporting those on larger bursary support.
If you would like any more information about our fees and financial assistance, feel free to get in touch with our friendly Finance team by emailing finance@nottinghamhigh.co.uk.
The school’s affiliated 34th Nottingham Scouts group also operates a Centenary Fund to ensure that no pupils who join the group will be excluded from activities, such as the summer camp, due to financial reasons.
Join us for a virtual open day and explore the inspiring journey of our school.Take a guided tour with Mrs. Simpson, our Deputy Head of International and Strategic Projects and discover the vibrant atmosphere of our Infant, Junior, Senior, and Sixth Form divisions at your own pace.
Is there anything I can do to prepare my child for the assessment?
Our entrance assessment process is carefully designed to help us to make a genuine judgement of your child’s readiness for our school environment. We want children to be happy here, and for the School to be the best fit for them. Therefore we prefer to see each child as they naturally are, and we don’t expect your child to have done any extra work to prepare for their assessment.
What will happen in my child’s Entrance Assessment:
Whilst our assessment format varies across the year groups, our main aim is always to make our applicants feel welcome and comfortable during their visits. Whether you are applying for a Nursery place, or a Sixth Form place, or any year group in between, we will always do our best to support you and your child throughout the process.
Senior School:
Your child will sit three exams which include 1 hour of English (reading comprehension and creative writing), 1 hours of Maths, and 1 hour of Verbal & Non-Verbal reasoning (this test is computer-based).
Junior and Senior School exam papers are set at National Curriculum level for the child’s current year group.
Sixth Form:
There is no Entrance Exam – entry into the Sixth Form is based on GCSE grade predictions and an Entrance Interview. Sixth Form applicants are required to achieve a minimum of 5 grade 7/A at GCSE.
Please note we do not accept applications into Year 11 or Year 13.
What is the deadline for applying for a place for my child?
If you are considering a September start for your child in a particular year group, we recommend that you submit your application by 1st December in the year prior to when your child will join us.
For example, if you are applying for a place for September 2026 entry, we recommend that you submit your application by 1st December 2025.
We will consider late or mid-year applications, subject to places being available.
Year 7 applicants only: If you are applying for a bursary-assisted place, you must submit your Application Form by the 1st November in the year before the September when your child would be joining us. Late bursary applications cannot be considering, due to limited funding.
Can my child join mid-year?
We can accept applications for a mid-year start, subject to places being available in your child’s year group. Please contact our Admissions team to discuss this further.
Please note we do not accept applications into Year 11 or Year 13.
Can I see sample exam papers?
Sample entrance exam papers are sent to Senior School applicants two weeks before the Entrance Exam. Sample papers are not provided for Junior School applicants.
Any sample exam papers found online are not supplied by or affiliated with Nottingham High School.
Can my child apply if they are currently based overseas?
We are always pleased to welcome applications from international students and/or those currently based outside of the UK. Please note that our School does not hold a license to sponsor international students. We cannot help with a student visa – all international applicants are required to hold a dependent visa or equivalent.
Do you do a sibling discount?
We do not offer sibling discounts.
How do I book a visit?
There are plenty of opportunities to visit Nottingham High School. Our Open Day event, held every September, is a fantastic opportunity to tour our Nursery, Infant & Junior School, Senior School, and Sixth Form Centre, meet our teachers and students, and enjoy a family-friendly morning getting to know the School.
We also offer tours on weekdays throughout the year, although we do recommend visiting during term-time if possible, so that you can see the School ‘in action’.
